Lost or Broken Crown Repair in Chicago

A crown that came off goes back on with fresh cement the same day when the tooth under it is sound, and gets remade when it isn't. Keep the crown, don't glue it, and call (773) 555-0199 before you come, since there's no walk-in option. Our Belmont Cragin office is open weekdays 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The $99 covers an emergency exam, consultation and panoramic X-ray. Fees may be adjusted due to complications or unforeseen circumstances. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

Signs you need lost crown repair today

A crown protects a tooth that has already lost much of its structure. Without it, the tooth is sensitive and easy to break. Call the same day if:

  • The crown came off whole, with or without a chunk of tooth inside it
  • The crown cracked or a piece broke away while chewing
  • A temporary crown fell off before your permanent one was ready
  • The tooth under the crown aches, or stings with cold air and liquids
  • The crown feels loose or rocks when you press on it

A crown that is still on but loose counts too. Bacteria work under it, and the tooth decays where you can't see.

What happens at your same-day visit

Have the crown with you, even if it's in pieces. Our dentists examine the tooth and take a panoramic X-ray to check the root and the bone around it. Then they look at why it came off.

When the tooth under it is sound, the old cement is cleaned off the crown and the tooth, the fit is checked, and the crown is cemented back on. You chew on it that day.

When the tooth has changed, re-cementing won't last. Decay under the edge, a chip in the tooth, or a crown that no longer seats fully means the tooth needs a new crown. Our dentists reshape the tooth, take an impression, and fit a temporary crown. The permanent one is cemented at a second visit.

When the crown itself is cracked or broken, it can't be reused, and a new one is made.

When the tooth broke off at the gum line inside the crown, there may not be enough left to hold any crown. Removing the root is covered on our emergency tooth extraction page, and we talk through your options for replacing it.

If the tooth is painful because the nerve inside is involved, we explain what the tooth needs and the next step before any crown work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to glue the crown back on at home?

No. Household glue and super glue damage the crown and the tooth, and they trap bacteria underneath. If you can't reach us the same day, a temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can hold the crown in place overnight, applied exactly as the package says. Then call (773) 555-0199 in the morning.

The crown fell off and nothing hurts. Can it wait a week?

Better not. The tooth under a crown has been cut down, so it chips easily and picks up decay fast. A week of chewing on it can turn a simple re-cementing into a new crown, or worse.

My temporary crown came off. Is that urgent?

Yes, for the same reason. The prepared tooth is exposed, and the neighboring teeth begin to shift, which can affect how the permanent crown fits. Keep the temporary, call us, and we re-cement it or make a new one the same day.

Why did my crown come off in the first place?

Common reasons are cement that wore out over the years, decay under the edge of the crown, a sticky food that pulled it loose, or a crack in the tooth beneath. The exam and X-ray show which one it was, and that decides whether the old crown goes back on.
