Signs you need wisdom tooth pain treatment today

Wisdom teeth hurt for four main reasons.

Calm dental consultation corner with a chair and daylight in a Chicago office

Pressure. A tooth pushing up through bone and gum causes a deep, dull ache that comes and goes for weeks.

Gum flap infection. When a wisdom tooth gets only partway out, a hood of gum sits over it. Food and bacteria collect underneath, and the flap swells, bleeds and tastes sour. It's the most common reason people call us, and it doesn't fix itself.

Decay. A wisdom tooth sits so far back that a toothbrush barely reaches it, so decay goes unnoticed until the tooth aches with cold or throbs at night. The molar beside it, where the two teeth touch, decays just as often.

Crowding. A tooth coming in at an angle shoves against the second molar. It's a tight, pushing soreness in the back corner of the jaw.

Call today if the pain keeps you up, the gum behind your last molar is swollen, you taste pus, or your jaw is stiff when you open. Go to a hospital emergency room first if the swelling has spread into your neck, you have a fever, or swallowing or breathing is hard. Hospitals treat spreading infection and injuries; they generally don't treat the tooth itself. Once they've seen you, the tooth is our part.

What happens at your same-day visit

Two steps: a look at the back of your mouth, then a panoramic X-ray. A single image shows all four wisdom teeth, the angle each one sits at, and how near they come to the jaw nerve below or the sinus above. It also catches decay between the wisdom tooth and the molar in front of it. Then you get a plain explanation and a written price. Nothing starts until you agree.

When the problem is a gum flap infection, the area is numbed and the flap is irrigated and cleared of trapped debris, with antibiotics when needed. If the tooth is impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed beyond saving or damaging the molar beside it, removal is the answer, and it's usually done in the same appointment. Our wisdom tooth extraction page covers simple versus surgical removal.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, and we say so when yours doesn't. If the real source is the molar next door and it can be kept, we explain what the tooth needs and the next step.

Cost of wisdom tooth pain treatment in Chicago

The $99 covers the exam, the consultation and the panoramic X-ray. Any treatment is a separate charge, quoted in writing after the X-ray. Irrigating a gum flap and surgically removing a sideways tooth are not the same job; you see your figure before saying yes.

We work with most PPO plans, many Medicare dental plans and selected HMO plans. If the plan in your wallet is one we work with, the exam and X-ray are billed to your plan. CareCredit, Cherry, Sunbit, Eve Financial and Proceed financing are available. Ask the front desk which suits you. Our cost and insurance page spells out the whole thing.

Exam, X-ray, diagnosis and treatment all happen in this one office, by our Illinois-licensed dentists. The front desk speaks Spanish during office hours. Frequently asked questions

What can I do tonight for wisdom tooth pain?

Warm salt water rinses every few hours help. So does a pharmacy pain reliever, taken the way the box directs; never set aspirin on the gum, since it burns tissue. A cold pack on the cheek, a quarter hour at a time, eases swelling. Don't poke at the gum flap. Then call (773) 555-0199 and take the morning slot.

Does wisdom tooth pain go away on its own?

Pressure from a tooth that's coming in straight often does. Pain from an infected gum flap, from decay or from a tooth wedged against the molar in front doesn't; it quiets for a while and returns, often worse. A panoramic X-ray tells us which kind you have, and that's the point of the visit.

Will the tooth be pulled at the first visit?

If the X-ray shows it should come out and you agree to the written price, usually yes. The exception is a large, hot infection, where numbing doesn't take well; then we settle the infection before taking the tooth out at a short follow-up.
